Model description#

NICAM is a non-hydrostatic icosahedral atmospheric model (Tomita and Satoh, 2004) with an explicit cloud microphysics scheme (Tomita, 2008). The configuration used in the DYAMOND project is similar to that described by Kodama et al. (2021). Cloud-microphysics parameter settings were readjusted for improvement in representation of convective systems. The version NICAM.19 was used for the simulation, and the experiments were conducted on Fugaku.

NICAM 3.5km atmosphere-only#

Setup:

Atmosphere-only

Resolution:
  • Horizontal resolution: 3.5km

  • Vertical resolution: 78 layers

  • Time step: 10s

Comments:
  • The experiment was initialized from ERA5 atmospheric data on Jan 20,2020.

  • SST was fixed to daily SST data with linear interpolation. SST and sea ice were given from the data provided at: https://swiftbrowser.dkrz.de/public/dkrz_ee0fb9db-31e9-4c9e-87eb-eaeead11bed1/DYAMOND_PHASE2/

  • Initial condition of land was given from a 5-year climatology on January 15th of NICAM integration at approximately 56 km horizontal resolution. Similar approach has been taken by Kodama et al. (2021).

  • The non-standardized output data (/fastdata/ka1081/DYAMOND/data/winter_data/AORI/NICAM-3km/DW-ATM_non_standardized/) is provided on the icosahederal grids on model levels. Grid information that corresponds the model grids to lat-lon grids is provided in /fastdata/ka1081/DYAMOND/data/winter_data/AORI/NICAM-3km/DW-ATM_non_standardized/history/
